What is Meningococcal ACWY Vaccine?

The quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine protects against four groups of the bacteria that cause meningitis. Saudi Arabia requires it for every Hajj and Umrah pilgrim aged 1 year and over.

Dosage and schedule

One dose, at least 10 days before arriving in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia accepts it for 5 years after a conjugate vaccine and 3 years after a polysaccharide vaccine.

Who it's for

  • Hajj and Umrah pilgrims aged 1 year and over (required by Saudi Arabia)
  • Other travellers your doctor considers at risk

Benefits

  • Protects against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y, which cause meningitis and bloodstream infection.
  • Meets Saudi Arabia's entry requirement for Hajj and Umrah.
  • The conjugate vaccine is preferred because it also reduces carriage of the bacteria.

Diseases prevented

  • Meningococcal meningitis
  • Meningococcal bloodstream infection (septicaemia)

Common reactions

  • Pain, redness or swelling where the injection was given.
  • Headache, tiredness or a mild fever.

Precautions

  • Tell the vaccinator about any severe allergy to a previous dose.
  • If you are pregnant or unwell, discuss timing with your doctor.
  • Keep the certificate: it must show the vaccine type and date.

When to seek help

  • Seek care for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a high fever that doesn't settle.
